My first golf course to review is a special one. Rachel and myself have spent a week in Normanville 5 of the last 7 years for our Christmas break, Links Lady Bay Resort has become our favourite place to visit each year, and we will continue to visit in the coming years, before I get to the golf course, Links Lady Bay Resort is a beautiful spot to escape, a very quiet and relaxing area, close walk to Normanville Beach, the Town of Normanville, and Yankalilla, the actual resort itself is clean and modern with great accommodation, all rooms come with a balcony over looking the golf course and views of the ocean, there is a day spa, gym, and The Peninsula Bar and Restaurant is open for lunch and dinner, and in my opinion, is by far one of the best restaurants in all of South Australia with great staff, including the owner Rick, brilliant atmosphere and views, TAB in the bar area and the food is to die for, sourced from local South Australian suppliers. If you only visit Links Lady Bay Resort for a meal, the trip will be well worth it.
Now back to the golf course, Links Lady Bay is one of my favourite courses to play, saying that it is by no means an easy course to navigate, especially for a weekend hacker like myself.
The front nine is fairly player friendly, my best score on the front nine over the years is 44, which I guess is not fantastic, but ill take it. Now on to the back nine, this is where things get tough, don’t get me wrong, still a brilliant course, but this is where I struggle. Very steep hills, deep bunkers, blind holes, hole 13 for example, you have no idea where your ball is heading or has landed, then there is the notorious hole 14, I will never forget the first time I played this hole, I left with my tail between my legs after losing 5 balls on the 1 hole, needless to say my Srixon Q Stars now go back in the bag for this hole.
Links Lady Bay overall is a brilliant layout and excellent quality golf course, new owners have recently taken over Links Lady Bay and are working hard by watering more, to increase the softness of the fairways, in the past they have been very firm and make it a bit tough to play, especially in the summer months, the greens are always in fantastic condition and over the years the rough just off the fairways has been cut down, making life a little easier for golfers like myself. The other great feature of this golf course, are the local mobs of kangaroo on almost every hole, be sure to watch you shot, because the kangaroos will not move, they have become used to golfers and their balls.
To finish, Links Lady Bay is a challenging, but beautiful course that will continue brining me back year after year, whenever I finish playing regardless of how good or bad, I always want more. Check it out for yourself, and I hope you enjoy it as much as me. Make sure you visit The Peninsula Bar and Restaurant after your round.
